Back to Basics: Eat Right & Stay Active

Ready to improve your health?

In this world of fad diets, get skinny quick, and magical pills I often hear patients complain how overwhelmed they are with choices. “I want to get healthier, but with so many options I’m not sure where to start!”

Getting healthy doesn’t have to be a complex process if you go back to the basics of healthy eating, exercise, and preventative healthcare. Here are my suggestions for a starting point:

1. Find an activity that interests you. I can’t tell you the number of people I hear complain how much they hate their workouts! With options spanning from yoga to Zumba to group training classes, you really don’t have to run if you hate it. Studies show if you choose an activity that interests you it will become fun, not a chore.

2. Eat whole foods. Our world is filled with processed foods, and finding quick meals that don’t contain trans fats and/or high fructose corn syrup can prove to be challenging! Cooking with whole foods takes all the guess work out, but when you don’t have time pay close attention to food labels. Remember, the first 3 ingredients are used in the largest amount in the product so avoid foods that list sugars or enriched flour here.

3. Guzzle that water! It’s a common recommendation to get your “8 glasses a day”, however for many of us that isn’t enough. Here in the desert we really should get more to account for the lack of moisture in the air. While many fruits help us hydrate, beverages like sports drinks, pop, and juice should be consumed in minimal amounts. Unless you’re performing intense exercise for more than 60 minutes, water is a better choice than sports drinks. Excess calories are excess calories regardless of whether they’re food or liquid! Juice and pop should be avoided due to the high sugar content, and diet versions as well due to the “fake sugars”. Think of using fruit such as lemon, lime, or orange to sweeten your water if you desire.

4. Utilize preventative medicine. Stress has a negative effect on our bodies, and removing or decreasing it can enhance our way of life. Chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture are excellent ways to decrease stress while optimizing your life!
